Safety: how we look after each other

Dame una mano exists to bring people together, not to expose them. These are the rules and tips so every event is safe.

Money is NEVER asked for here

No fees, no sign up costs, no collections, no transfers, no bank details. If someone asks you for money at an event or in a chat, don't give it and report it.

How to report

  1. Open the event's page.
  2. Tap “Report”, choose the reason and tell us what happened.
  3. Our team gets the report and reviews it by hand. If several people report the same event, it's hidden while we review it.

Report what puts people at risk or breaks the rules. If it's urgent or you can't sign in, write to hola@dameunamano.org.

If someone is in danger

Call the emergency line 123 (in Colombia). Dame una mano doesn't replace the police, the fire department or health services.

If you go to an event

  • Check the date, the time and the meeting point carefully.
  • Tell someone you trust where you're going and with whom.
  • Bring water, sunscreen and comfortable clothes.
  • If something doesn't feel right, don't go or leave. Your safety comes first.
  • If you're under 18, go with your family's permission and respect the event's age limit.
  • Never hand over money or bank details.

If you organize

  • Choose public places, during the day and with good light.
  • Ask for the permits you need if you'll work on the street or in a public space.
  • Explain in the event what the risks are and what to bring.
  • Have water, a first aid kit and a charged phone at hand.
  • Don't ask for dangerous tasks, like working at heights or with chemicals, without trained people.
  • Ask for permission before taking or posting photos of people, especially children and older people.
  • If you help someone at their home, share the exact address only with the people who join.

Cleanup & environment
  • Wear gloves. Don't pick up needles, glass or hazardous waste by hand: tell the waste collection company.
  • Bring heavy duty bags and separate what can be recycled.
  • Near rivers or streams, don't go into the water if there's a current.
Infrastructure & repairs
  • If you work on a road, wear vests, use cones and tell the traffic authority.
  • Wear gloves and goggles when working with cement or paint.
  • Don't do electrical work or work at heights without trained people.
People & care
  • Ask for permission before posting a photo of a person. Their dignity comes first.
  • Don't post the exact address of a home. Share it only with the people who join.
  • Go as a group and respect the place's schedule.
Education & children
  • With children, always as a group and with an adult who is responsible for the place.
  • Don't share photos of minors without their family's permission.
Food
  • Wash your hands and tie your hair back when cooking.
  • Check expiration dates and keep food at the right temperature.
  • Ask about allergies before handing food out.
Health & wellbeing
  • Only health workers give medical advice or care.
  • If it's a health day, run it with a health center or an authorized organization.
Animals
  • Don't touch animals you don't know without guidance from whoever cares for them.
  • Coordinate with shelters or vets.
  • If an animal is hurt or aggressive, tell the environmental or animal protection authority.
Emergencies & disasters
  • Always follow the authorities and relief organizations.
  • Don't go into risk areas.
  • Help only with hands and in kind. Money is never collected.
Culture & community
  • If many people come, agree on a meeting point and what to do if someone gets lost.
  • Ask for permission to use public spaces.
Safety & coexistence
  • Never confront anyone. Walks are to keep people company and raise the alarm, not to watch people.
  • If you see something dangerous, call 123.
Technology & training
  • Never ask for passwords or bank details when you help with a phone or a computer.
  • Teach the person to do it themselves.
Clothes & goods
  • Check that clothes and items are clean and in good condition.
  • Give donations to whoever needs them, without asking for anything in return.
Water & basic services
  • Wear boots and long gloves.
  • Don't go into tanks, wells or sewers without trained people and good ventilation.
